Pisum sativum ssp. arvense
Italian wild pea or original lentil.
This old wild pea variety originates from the mountainous regions of Umbria and has almost fallen into oblivion as it cannot be harvested mechanically. The plant only grows to a height of around 30 cm and grows close to the ground. The wild pea is relatively undemanding as far as its location is concerned, only waterlogging should be avoided. Its fruits are the size of lentils and are brown in color. Despite its outwardly inconspicuous appearance, the wild pea scores with its excellent taste: it is much less floury than other peas and tastes intensely nutty. It is therefore suitable for all lentil and pea dishes, as a side dish with fish and in soups and stews.
